Amelia Island book transforms rich photography into tour guide
When you visit Amelia Island, Florida, you will most likely find a copy of Tidewater Amelia in your hotel room. Why? It so beautifully features many of the historic homes, inns, churches and other structures that are part of the rich history of Amelia, Cumberland and Fort George islands. For many, it serves as a tour guide with hundreds of carefully crafted photos of the nostalgic buildings that once comprised the various 18th century communities.
Impressive in size, the book is 14 inches tall by 10 inches wide and presented several printing challenges. Finding paper with the most suitable size to minimize waste was the first challenge since most sheets are made to fit standard or more commonly used sizes. Hong Kong is an international hub with paper from all over the world and, after an extensive search, a European stock from a renewable source was chosen.
The next challenge was binding. Because this is considered oversize and not able to be bound on automated machinery, hand guidance had to be implemented, employing special workers to carefully sew each signature.
The cover has a classic design, which showcases an image of one of the historic homes by on-laying it onto an indented rectangular (debossed) area with gold stamping framing the image. The cover is handsomely finished with the title on the front and spine stamped in gold, which contrasted the rich forest green cloth.
To complete the project, the book is fitted with a handsome slipcase. It is printed and laminated, emulating the cover of the book and made by hand. Getting the exact fit for book and slipcase is important and, again, Interpress’ oversight of the project ensured the quality of the cover and slipcover, adding to the richness of the final project.
