A Day On Amelia Island – a Little Masterpiece
If you’ve never visited beautiful Amelia Island, you are missing something. But, if you were lucky enough to have a copy of the title, “A Day on Amelia Island”, you could experience some of the many wonders that Amelia has to share.
Amelia Island sits at the north eastern most part of the Florida coastline and is part of the Sea Islands chain of barrier islands and has 13 miles of beautiful beaches, an abundance of natural wildlife and a rich history that has created beautiful and diverse architecture. These three combine to provide the material for this wonderful book.
Photographers Stephan R. Leimberg, Dawna Moore and Scott Moore have compiled a visual feast of photographs taken over several years and lovingly created a journey for the uninitiated to explore and adore the place that they now call home. The idea for such a book was borne from a similar book about Iceland whose layout and packaging were both adopted for this title by the authors. They wanted a small book in a landscape format with a convenient carrying bag.
At our first meeting, we looked at several different trim sizes with an eye for something that would be big enough to display the photos adequately but not too big to carry as one toured the island. The final size was determined at 4” tall by 6” wide with a total of 368 pages. The thickness of the spine is just about one and a quarter inches giving it a nice proportion for this petite size.
We used a high-quality art paper for this title of 106 lb (157 gsm) and it has both very good opacity as well as brightness. All of the photographs are rich in color and it was imperative that colors not be visible through the pages. This paper was ideal and with the fine matt finish, was able to accomplish the result that the authors had hoped for.
Creating the bag was more of a challenge. We had only a torn sample of what was left of the bag that the authors wanted to duplicate and had to construct something new using materials that would be suited both for printing and strength. We made a few samples and finally found the best paper and finish that would accomplish both goals. We used a thick uncoated paper and after printing, added a heavy matt lamination giving the bag greater protection and added strength before final construction was done.
The first printing was so well received that a reprint followed within only months of the first printing. It continues to be a success as tourists and islanders alike all clamor for more copies.
Next time you are at the Jacksonville International Airport make sure to have a closer look at a copy that is for sale in one of the stores. It is a great example of a successful printing project.
